Most people call for furnace services only when there’s something wrong. No one ever really cares to ask “hey, hows the ol’ heating system doing?”. Nope. They just wait until the thing breaks down and THEN get a specialist in to come look. Well, here’s the thing with that. Sometimes the furnace specialist gets called in too late! Sometimes the furnace has already said its last words and is no longer with us. That means the bill will be 80 times more expensive than a simple tune up would have been. If you don’t care for the health of your poor furnace, at least care for the health of your wallet. Get tune-up’s frequently!!!

What Actually Happens During a Furnace Maintenance Service?

Furnace maintenance tune-ups generally involve looking at all the furnaces essential components. They take these components to test them, clean them, adjust them, lubricate them and test them again as they are needed. Furnace specialist perform all of the following tasks as needed:

• Vent system & air intake grill inspect along with removing the blockages
• Lubricating all moving parts in the heating system
• Examining the heat exchanger for corrosion or damage
• Checking air filter & cleaning or replacing it if needed
• Checking & cleaning the blower to remove any debris
• Inspecting all electrical connections to secure or replace them if damaged
• Examining the burner & flame sensor
• Checking & testing the furnaces safety controls
• Checking the thermostat & calibrating it if needed
• Inspecting the blower motor & testing its amperage 
• Examining the furnace belts for signs of cracks or general damage

How Often Should You Get a Furnace Maintenance Service?

In Chicago, we advise everyone to get a furnace tune-up right before winter. This means that towards the end of fall/around Thanksgiving is when you should be scheduling your furnace maintenance. This is advised because in case your furnace does have an issue, you don’t want to be freezing your butt off until the furnace guy shows up to your door! Believe us, it’s not a fun time! Getting your furnace checked out before the cold season insures you that you’ll have a warm cozy house through till March!
